The Turks and Caicos Islands are an ideal holiday destination located on the outer edge of the Caribbean.
Made up of 40 individual islands and cays, they offer the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure, with miles of sandy beaches coupled with some of the best water sports in the Caribbean.
As the islands are still one of the lesser known destinations, we’ve put together this quick guide with everything you need to know when visiting TCI for the first time.
When is the best time to visit?
As with most Caribbean destinations, TCI’s peak season is mid-December to mid-April, becoming less busy in the summer months.
Weather
TCI has, on average, around 350 days of sunshine a year, with temperatures ranging between 25 – 35˚Call year round.
From June to November there is an increased risk of hurricanes so while it may be cheaper to visit during these months, visitors are advised against it. You can find more weather information here.
Travel
TCI is served by one international airport, the Provo International Airport on Providenciales, with many major airlines offering flights on a regular basis.
Once you have arrived, you can get domestic flights to the other islands or make use of the extensive taxi services. For more information, visit this page.
Currency
Despite being a British Overseas Territory, the official currency is the US dollar. Most major credit and debit cards are widely accepted, with lots of ATMs available. Tipping is also similar to the US at around 15-20%.
What accommodation is available?
There are lots of different types of accommodation available, to suit lots of budgets. While there are eight inhabited islands, some of these are private resorts so only offer one choice. Providenciales is the biggest island and offers the most choice in accommodation.
Resorts are wide-ranging, with places like Blue Haven offering a family friendly stay, while luxury resorts like Beach House have a more romantic, boutique vibe.
For a more budget trip, consider booking through Airbnb or visit this page on TripAdvisor for more bed and breakfasts.
Best Beaches
TCI is home to Grace Bay beach, which is regularly voted one of the best beaches in the world by TripAdvisor. It offers twelve miles of white sand and clear water and is undoubtedly the most popular beach in the islands.
For a less crowded experience, Leeward Beach offers a chance for some peace and quiet. If you’re into exploring the depths of the ocean, then the Three Mary Cays on North Caicos offers some prime snorkelling. Visit this page for some more recommendations.
Best food
The culinary delights of TCI are second to none in the Caribbean, giving you the chance to experience some traditional, authentic cuisine.
Da Conch Shack is a relaxed beach hut with some fantastic dishes on offer. As the name suggests it offers a taste of the local conch, as well as wider fresh seafood delights which can be accompanied by live music on Wednesday nights.
Coco Bistro offers a more fine dining experience, combining fresh local cuisine with an American twist.
The Thursday Fish Fry on Providenciales is also the perfect way to pick up some local street food while listening to some live music, and you can peruse the wares of local artists as you eat.
What activities are on offer?
TCI offers something for everyone, whatever your preferences.
If you’re after something more relaxing, spending a day sunning yourself on the numerous beaches is ideal, while a spot of golfing at the Provo Golf Club is the perfect way to while away an afternoon.
If you prefer a bit of culture, take a trip to see the historic Cheshire Hall or pay a visit to the Turks and Caicos National Museum.
Finally, a trip to TCI isn’t complete without a spot of watersports. Whether you go big with paragliding or jet skiing or play it safe with some snorkelling or diving, these islands are perfect for frolicking in the waves.
