Tour the Backcountry
Adventure and natural beauty await at the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in Orange Beach. Measuring more than 15 miles, the backcountry trail complex encompasses seven trails and six distinct ecosystems. Visitors will find trails for hiking, biking, running and walking, all of which wind through Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Each trail ranges from 1 mile to 2.75 miles. While exploring, see wildlife including alligators and Gulf overlooks and bridges. Also located on-site is a golf course, restrooms and water fountains, a sportsplex, and the Gulf State Park headquarters. After a hike, stop by the Pavilion and Butterfly Garden, where you can relax on a porch swing, or admire all the colorful butterflies and flora.
Visit Another Time Period
Located on the Fort Morgan peninsula sits a third-system masonry fort built between 1819 and 1833. Fort Morgan showcases the fort’s rich history, as it was used in the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. The museum at Fort Morgan features artifacts – including uniforms and artillery – dating more than 200 years old. Step back in time every Tuesday in June and July when Fort Morgan hosts special evening Civil War tours complete with re-enactors in period dress. Although rich in history, the site also offers naturual areas to roam, a boat launch and access to the Gulf’s beautiful beaches.
Hang With Local Wildlife
Discover some of the state’s last remaining undisturbed coastal habitat at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Among the hidden gems of Alabama Beaches, the refuge is open year-round for hiking, birding and wildlife viewing, and fishing. The refuge opened in 1980 as a way to protect the neotropical migratory songbird habitat and other threatened and endangered species. Kitty’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a menu packed full of home-cooked goodness. Breakfast items include omelets and breakfast combos, while the lunch and dinner menus offer a large selection of sandwiches and wraps. The Kountry Korner section showcases the meat and two, with favorites including country fried steak, chicken dishes and seafood specialties, served with two sides. For dessert, try the bread pudding drizzled in whiskey sauce.

Don’t let the building fool you. For more than 30 years Sea-N-Suds has been one of the top hidden gems of Alabama beaches for its food and views. Sea-N-Suds offers beachfront dining on the Alabama Gulf Coast. The restaurant sits directly on the beach and pier overlooking the waters, and features a smoke-free and family-friendly atmosphere. Diners will find diverse seafood and oyster menu items for lunch and dinner. Sea-N-Suds’ affordable menu includes renown gumbo, an oyster bar, shrimp specials and a fish of the day. Diners will also enjoy valet parking, and be sure to check out the gift shop before or after a meal.
Chill at The Gulf
Orange Beach features a hidden gem of Alabama Beaches named The Gulf, a casual restaurant made from repurposed shipping containers with comfortable outdoor seating as well. Think plush chairs overlooking the beach and giant umbrellas. In addition to the décor, the menu changes regularly. Diners will find daily seafood specials, tacos, the Gulf burger, grouper sandwiches, pulled BBQ and more. The Gulf welcomes visitors of all ages to join them for lunch and dinner. The family-friendly bar also plays vinyl records and stays open until 11 p.m., making it a top spot for late-night drinks and relaxing in the evening.
Join the Party
Bahama Bob’s slogan, “The lower the altitude, the better the attitude” best describes this beach cafe’s atmosphere. Known as a place to have fresh seafood or sip drinks with friends, Bahama Bob’s draws locals and tourists alike. Sit outside under the turquoise canopy and select from house specialties, island seafood, grilled and steamed items, and more. Guests will find an array of seafood including coconut fried shrimp, crawfish, striped pangus, mahi mahi, to name a few. Pair the meal with a drink, and watch the sun set in the Gulf. Note: Because locals and tourists frequent this gem, the place can get a little busy during the dinner rush hours.
